Squash (Cucurbita spp.)

S

Summer Squash

Sow seeds ¾-inch deep. Space 18-30 inches apart in rows 4 feet apart, or 6-8 seeds per hill, in hills 4 feet apart. Water well when you plant, then do not overwater seeds. Harvest squash at 6 inches.

To save the seeds:
Cut through the squash about one-third from the bottom. If you cut the squash in half many of the seeds will be damaged. Remove seeds and rinse well in a colander to remove fibers. Spread the seeds on a coffee filter and dry thoroughly, be sure to label each sample with all important information.

Planting your saved seeds:
Isolation distance needed to separate varieties that can cross pollinate for seed saving is 800-1,400 feet. Save seeds from 5-10 plants. If stored when completely dry in airtight, cold, dry conditions seeds can be viable for 6 years.
